The Who Was? Show — Fans Are Left Without A Second Season
The Netflix Original series, The Who Was? Show, released its first season in May of 2018 and is comprised of 13 episodes. This sketch comedy series features a cast of teens who use skits, satire, and songs to make learning history not only enjoyable, but genuinely educational.
Each episode features 2 different historical figures from The Who Was? books, with appearances such as Marie Antionette, Louis Armstrong, and even Blackbeard. This series uniquely combines humor and historical truth to transport viewers into the world of each individual character. When has there been a show that can accurately tell the story of Sacagawea’s journey through mock YouTube channel clips? Or creates an entire sketch, about inventive ways to make farts smell better.
The Who Was? Show is a type of entertainment you can’t find anywhere else and, like cast member Andy Daly said, “I think this is a pretty unique blend of funny, fun, and legitimately informative.”
Why the discontinuation?
So the question remains: why did The Who Was? Show discontinue after its first season? TikToker Zach Timson, who played a variety of characters in the series, expressed his disappointment that he dedicated “an entire summer to make a Netfix series about historical figures called ‘The Who Was? Show’, only for the show to get canceled after one season.”
Rumors have suggested that the show’s cancellation was due to the lack of viewership and the cost of production. However, the show was based on the popular book franchise with over 40 million copies sold worldwide, leaving viewers to question the cancellation.
Who ate the grapes?
Fans are outraged by the season’s cliffhanger in Episode 13, which features Julius Caesar and Bruce Lee. In the series Ron, who is played by Andy Daly, is the clueless CEO of the show who asks a lot of questions and constantly advocates for Bruce Lee to be featured in an episode.
At last, Bruce Lee, or “Brucie” is chosen to co-star on the season’s finale, alongside dictator Julius Caesar, who is determined to overthrow Ron and take over The Who Was? Show. The show effortlessly details the lives of Bruce Lee and Julius Caesar while humoring its viewers with a possible revolt.
In the episode’s final scene, the Who Was? Show breakout room has been transformed to resemble a throne room. Julius Caesar sits comfortably as he yells for Ron to “get me my grapes!”
This is when Brucie enters the room and is backed by the entire Who Was? Show cast as he says “The only thing you’ll be getting… is your butt kicked.”
Suspense has risen and the standoff continues when Ron enters the room holding Caesar’s requested grapes. With Ron and the grapes as the only thing separating the standoff, Brucie and Caesar suddenly lunge at each other in slow motion. The viewers are on the edge of their seats when the scene freezes with Ron and the grapes sandwiched between an anger dictator and an experienced ninja.
“Who will survive the battle of Who HQ?” “Who will rescue Ron?” “Who will get to eat those grapes?” The questions flashed on the screen reflected the ones everyone was thinking.
A pointless cliffhanger
The first season of The Who Was? Show left off with a cliffhanger that perfectly set up the story to continue and answer all of our burning questions. However, with the unfortunate discontinuation of the show, the viewers will never know who actually got to eat the grapes.
With the book franchise being so popular, there are enough characters to easily feature in a second season and explore their stories.
True fans are disappointed with this missed opportunity and demand answers. Unfortunately, who ate the grapes and what happened to The Who Was? Show headquarters may remain unanswered.
